Cucurbita maxima 'North Georgia Candy Roaster' fruit

It has been our experience that Cucurbita maxima 'North Georgia Candy Roaster' performs well in our area in a warm season planting. It grows with trailing vines, either left to grow on the ground, or it can be grown on a trellis.

The fruit has abundant light, tan flesh and can grow to be large, including up to two and a half feet long. Although there are seeds in the fruit, they are based within the central cavity and can be easily removed by scooping them out. The flavor is distinct and a bit sweeter than other winter squashes. It can be used in place of pumpkin in many recipes.

We have found it to be very tolerant of squash vine borers. Although the borers entered the vine, the fruit did not seem to be effected, as new fruit continued to develop and mature. The borers were removed, which likely helped to improve its longevity, but the recovery of the 'North Georgia Candy Roaster' after the borers removal was impressive.
